The demand for staycations in the UK is on the rise. It’s been reported by Travel News Daily that 15 million more summer breaks in the UK could boost tourism spending to the tune of £3.6 billion.
Whether it’s a secluded weekend break for two, a local attraction with the family or a city break with friends, living in the UK boasts some great holiday destinations all within a couple of hours’ drive. With driving holidays, you won’t need to worry about:
- There will be no dealing with overcrowded airports.
- Remembering your passport
- No luggage allowance
- Freedom to use your own car
Being able to load the car up with essentials and your loved ones is one of the great joys of holidaying at home. Safe in the knowledge that when you get there, you won’t need to pester the locals by asking where the bus station is or ending up in the middle of nowhere.
But before you leave, it’s worth checking that your vehicle is safe and will protect you and your loved ones. We’ve put together a checklist for you to use to make sure that this staycation doesn’t turn into a holiday nightmare.
Tyres
Check that there is enough tread and that the pressure is set correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If your car still has a spare, check its condition.
Fluids
Check that brake fluid, engine oil and screenwash levels are topped up and ready for your road trip.
Brakes
For a small fee, a garage will gladly inspect your brakes. In some cases, it is completely free.
Lights
Enlist the assistance of another person for this one. Check that the sidelights, dipped beams, main beams, fog, brake, reverse and hazard lights are working. Don’t forget about the right and left indicators for the front and back.

Check for software updates on your Sat Nav. If you are using your phone via Google Maps or Waze, then check the apps for any updates.
Roadtrip munchies
Keep water and some snacks in your car ready for a long road trip. The last thing you want is to be stuck in traffic, gasping for something to eat or drink. And no road trip is complete without some hard boiled sweets (red ones are our favourites).
Take a break
Taking regular breaks, even for shorter journeys, is advisable. And come on, who doesn’t love a service station? Our personal favourite is Leigh Delamer on the M4.
